The first Raider 2 Raider Family Night was held on February 16. The aim of the family night was to help students new to the country feel included in the Reynolds school community and to inform parents about how they can be involved in their children’s education at Reynolds. In addition, it was an opportunity for families to meet and interact with other parents.
The event ran from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Volunteers helped setup, welcomed the families, helped with the different sessions, watched over the kids, and helped clean up. At 5:30, the families were welcomed and invited to eat dinner. A variety of food, including Middle Eastern, African, and Mexican food was served to highlight the different cultures present at the event.
After dinner, families were divided into three groups and attended different information sessions run by teachers, Raider 2 Raider council members, and volunteers. In the first session, parents learned about the benefit of clubs for their children and which clubs are available at Reynolds High School. The second session was a tour where parents had the opportunity to see the environment in which their children are learning and the school facilities. In the third session, they discussed the importance of excusing their children when they are unable to attend school and were shown how they can do so correctly. In addition to discussing attendance, they also had the opportunity to ask questions in a Q&A session.
The night was a success and the Raider 2 Raider team plans to have another family night this school year with the hope that every year there will be three to four family nights to help students and families smoothly transition into their new school environment.
